Dasharatha is the King of Ayodhya and has three wives and four sons, Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughana. Rama is the ideal and perfect son, and grows up with his brothers. When he comes of age, he marries Sita, the princess of a nearby kingdom. However, Bharata's mother, Kaikeyi, resents Rama being the crown prince. She calls up a debt that Dasharatha owes her and asks for Rama to be exiled for fourteen years and her son Bharata be made crown prince instead.
The devastated Dasharatha has no choice and Rama prepares to leave for exile. Sita and Lakshmana will not leave his side however and follow him into the forest. While in the forest, Surphanaka, a female rakshasi (demoness) becomes enamored of Rama and is wounded by Lakshmana while trying to kill Sita. She flees to her brother Khara and asks him to avenge her. However, Khara and his army are defeated by Rama and Lakshmana, and only one member of their entire army survives. This lone soldier flees to the island kingdom of Lanka and begs Surphanaka's brother, the mighty king Ravana to avenge them. Ravana has heard of Sita's beauty and he decides to abduct her. Using trickery and magic, he manages to lure Rama and Lakshmana away from Sita and kidnaps her, taking her away to Alengka.
Rama and Lakshmana travel far and wide searching for Sita but to no avail. Finally, they come upon a band of vanaras or monkey-men who pledge to help him. One of the might warriors of the vanaras, Hanoman, becomes Rama's staunch devotee. The vanaras seek out traces of Sita and find she has been taken to Lanka. Hanuman flies to Lanka and confirms she is imprisoned there. He contacts Sita and informs her of Rama's whereabouts, promising that they will be back to rescue her. Before returning to the mainland, Hanoman sets fire to the whole city of Lanka.
Rama, Lakshmana and the vanar army build a causeway from the tip of India to Alengka. They travel to Alengka, where an epic battle follows between the armies. Ravana was finally killed by Rama, and Sita is freed. They return to Ayodhya, where Bharata returns the crown to Rama.
Here are the main characters in the story of the Ramayana:
Rama | Sri Rama: The story is about his journey, so he’s basically the main character. He is the eldest and favorite son of King Dasharatha. Many Hindus believe he is a reincarnation of the god Vishnu.
Sita | Shinta | Dewi Shinta: She’s a beautiful princess and daughter of King Janak, who found her in a furrow and regarded her as a blessed child. Through a competition, she becomes Rama’s wife.
Lakshmana: Brother of Rama, he protects Shinta and Rama during their time in exile in the forest.
Ravana | Rahwana: The ten-headed King of Alengka. He is a powerful demon who abducts Sita.
Jatayu: A great bird that fights Rahwana to free Shinta from Rahwana. But he was eventually killed.
Hanoman: A leader of the monkey tribes that aligns with Rama in his fight against Rahwana. As his father was the God of Wind, Hanoman has many supernatural abilities that he uses in battle.
These are the primary characters in the adaptation that you will see at Purawisata.
Of course, in such a long and historical tale there are far more characters. You can check out a full description of the characters in the Ramayana here.

We watched the indoor theatre performance. The package includes transportation (2 ways), dinner and ticket to the performance. My 4 year old son was charged half of the adult price. Dinner is served in buffer style. The theatre performance started at 8 pm and it is in the open air indoor theatre. I can only say it was a great performance and my son was watching the show interestingly. Please do not miss this show if you visiting Yogyakarta.

To go to Java and miss this experience is too bad. Yes, they are very touristy and mostly Westerners show up, but the show seems quite authentic. I had been to similar performances in Bali, and they seemed less authentic. Just an impression.

I highly recommend this culture as l experience. You can see the show with a buffet dinner beforehand or without, but the meal is good (mixture of international and local cuisine) and very reasonably priced.
The musical ballet is a fast paced abbreviated version of the Ramayana epic--a good thing since very few could last a full 8 hour performance. The performers are very skilled and professional...and they even offer audience members to come on stage at the end to get selfies with the cast.
